These pictures were taken over 48 hours on October 3 and 4 1993 in Mogadishu, Somalia. They follow an attempt by American Rangers and Delta Force troops to capture Somali factional leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Civilians became involved in the fighting between American troops and Somali militia loyal to Aidid. The story of these two days formed the basis of Blackhawk Down directed by Ridley Scott.
During the battle two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and three others damaged. Some of the American soldiers managed to return to their compound but others, trapped at their crash site, were killed.
Somali casualty figures are disputed. American estimates are that between 1,000 and 1,500 Somali militia and civilians were killed, and another 3,000 – 4,000 injured. The International Red Cross estimated 200 Somalis killed and several hundred wounded. 19 American soldiers were killed and 73 wounded.
